history
formation, 2007

the anz championship founded in 2007 new elite domestic netball competition in new zealand , australia. replaced commonwealth bank trophy in australia , trans-tasman competition announced, competition reported feature 5 teams each country. new competition, 5 australian franchises formed amalgamations of commonwealth bank trophy teams.


the deadline expressions of interests australian franchises 10 april 2007. in march 2007, netball australia chief executive kate palmer said preferred model 1 team each new south wales, victoria, south australia, queensland , western australia. in april confirmed composition of league s australian teams. netball new south wales boss caroline campbell said disappointed sydney sandpipers , hunter jaegars have merge.


details of franchise announced in december. new south wales franchise adopted name swifts , after sydney swifts. julie fitzgerald, former coach of sydney swifts, announced coach new anz championship franchise.


inaugural season, 2008

the swifts 1 of first franchises name squad inaugural season. australian national players catherine cox , selina gilsenan announced captain , vice-captain, respectively. during 2008 season, swifts finished second @ end of round-robin stage. defeated magic in semi-finals in hamilton progress directly grand final. on 28 july 2008, swifts defeated waikato/bay of plenty magic 65–56 win inaugural season of anz championship. after game, swifts veteran midcourt player selina gilsenan announced retirement.

2009

in preseason tournament, sydney olympic park netball cup, swifts won 5 of 7 games , other 2 games ended in draw. enough swifts win cup , $10,000.


in anz championship, swifts won first game against canterbury tactix (the team swifts didn t win in 2008) seventeen goals , claimed top spot in ladder after round one. in round two, after fought game against adelaide thunderbirds, swifts lost 1 goal. in round three, swifts lost 18 goals waikato bay of plenty magic. during game, swifts lost bulley falling on ground head first, cox after bad landing on tod s foot , lost pettitt after falling down heavily. despite cox missing 1 shot, pettitt missing 3 shots , bell missing two, wasn t enough beat van dyk s perfect accuracy , tutaia s 1 miss. in round four, swifts against northern mystics , despite cox missing 3 shots in final quarter , scoring no rebounds against latu (who shot 38/40), cookey , rasmussen, swifts won 59-55 maintain winning streak @ home. however, after that, swifts lost last 9 games in row , fell down 9th place.


after win against canterbury tactix, nsw swifts first ever team win against every opposition. waikato/bay of plenty magic second team achieve after defeating both swifts , vixens in 2009.

2010

after shocking performance in 2009, swifts recruited england defender sonia mkoloma team. first time swifts have added international player squad. last team in history of anz championship recruit international player (the swifts team not have import player since start of competition). year, co-vice captains team kimberlee green , kimberly smith. in addition, swifts have new assistant coach robert wright, current nsw institute of sport development coach. wright officially first male assistant coach in anz championship history.


during off-season, kimberly borger ais added squad, serious injury meant wasn t able begin debut swifts. result, former hunter jaegar member lara welham replaced borger. during pre-season, cox rested due ankle injury , wasn t able take part in both pre-season training , sopa cup. in sopa cup, swifts won 5 of 7 games, losing west coast fever , eventual pre-season winners queensland firebirds.


in anz championship, many experts believed swifts won t able reach top 4 due poor performance last year. result, swifts year of redemption in hopes return top (similar melbourne vixens in 2009). in round 1, swifts upset firebirds @ gold coast 3 goals , cox named player of match. in round 2, swifts won against thunderbirds @ home ground. in round 3, swifts played against tactix, swifts lost them @ christchurch in 2008. after end of regulation time, game draw , time had played. cox made bold move bench herself due poor performance on court youngster wild , swifts won match 56-53. in round 4, during first half, last place pulse led swifts as seven. after trailing 5 goals after first half, swifts scored first ten goals in second half , won match 50-36. in round 5, despite conceding first 3 goals against fever, swifts played best performance after 5 rounds win 55-43.


in round 6, swifts had bye after 5 match winning streak. in round swifts team not have loss when vixens had surprise loss against firebirds. in round 7, swifts led 1 goal @ 3 quarter time, despite trailing 1 goal after first few minutes of final quarter, swifts won match 14 goals. in round 8, swifts defeated thunderbirds , broke 4 match winning streak. in round 9, swifts defeated firebirds , broke 4 match winning streak well. in round 10, swifts comfortable winners against fever. in round 11, swifts defeated mystics , maria tutaia sent off minute , half of play persistent breaking on centre pass. before round 12, during training, vanessa ware suffered serious knee injury required reconstruction , not did end ware s season, blew away chance of possible selection diamonds squad. in round 12, swifts defeated magic despite them having jade clarke , not having vanessa ware. in round 13, after scores tied @ half time, swifts managed win 12 goals against vixens in melbourne. during match, not catherine cox awarded player of match, cox became second player ever play 200 games in domestic league (the first sharelle mcmahon) , received bouquet of flowers sharelle mcmahon. also, swifts won sargeant mckinnis cup vixens. in round 14, swifts defeated steel. result, swifts officially first ever team go undefeated in regular season.

2011

after missing out on spot in last years grand final, swifts recruited mo onia gerrard adelaide thunderbirds. in addition, swifts recruited veteran carla dziwoki after making great impact @ both in state league , in australian national league forming great shooting combination current swifts player amy wild. swifts 1 of 2 teams not have new players in team (the other pulse). however, swifts have used players not in main squad during pre-season matches against mystics including april letton, fastnet diamonds defender.

2012

the 2012 season sees many of nsw swifts players departing , many players coming in. major loss of catherine cox, team s captain has been swifts since commonwealth bank trophy , leaving west coast fever after stripped off captaincy role , told not needed @ swifts lisa beehag, 2012 swifts coach. rebecca bulley has left adelaide thunderbirds, courtney tairi has left southern steel , kimberley smith (netball player) has announced retirement earlier in 2011. joanna sutton adelaide thunderbirds has been signed swifts former swifts samantha may. remaining 2 gains have been recruited anl nsw warratahs; kimberly borger , kristy guthrie (née durheim).

2013

the 2013 anz championship season has seen sport soar new heights, records tumbling across board. record scorelines, record crowds, , record memberships, reflect growing popularity of world’s premier domestic netball competition, anz championship. while nsw swifts did not feature in finals year, team won many admirers throughout competition never-say-die attitude, contesting number of close matches down wire.in years come, 2013 fondly remembered series of extraordinary feats. roster, there ten player milestones celebrated, debut nsw netballing “talent”, , players rewarded selection in australian representative squads. nsw swifts’ athletes named game mvp on 6 occasions, , club retained sargeant-mckinnis cup fourth straight season stirring nine-goal away victory on melbourne vixens. nsw swifts enjoyed record membership in 2013, , club’s round 11 game against adelaide thunderbirds @ allphones arena saw new nsw swifts’ regular season home crowd record of 8,021. 2013 remembered season club celebrated career , contribution of vanessa ware, after 107 games swift decided hang netball shoes @ season’s end. mo’onia gerrard announced taking break playing elite netball during 2014 anz championship pursue olympic rugby sevens dream, remain part of club role in restructured swifts’ coaching panel next season.

2014

the 2014 anz championship season record-breaking year nsw swifts, both on , off court. record membership numbers record crowd numbers, swifts featured in finals series first time since 2011.


we celebrated our highest membership numbers date 1,676 signing cheer red zone, setting new anz championship regular season crowd of 10,118 @ allphones arena – smashing previous record of 8,509.


the club welcomed new head coach – albeit familiar face – in rob wright, 6 new recruits in playing roster, including 3 anz championship debutants. team faced many challenges @ beginning of 2014 campaign, developing new combinations season-ending injuries. skill , sheer determination, swifts finished regular season in third place host waikato/bay of plenty magic in minor semi final.


the roster’s outstanding performances throughout season acknowledged higher honours; 4 swifts selected in 2014 australian diamonds squad, 3 athletes represent australia @ 2014 commonwealth games, further player named in australian 21/u squad, league honours susan pettitt , kimberlee green – voted 2014 foxtel anz championship all-star team, , anz championship joint-most valuable player nod green.
