early life
descended both old irish family of high connections old , respected manx family, john moore jeffcott born in castletown, isle of man in 1817. father had been surgeon in royal navy, following discharge settled in south of island. jeffcott s mother daughter of reverend john moore, vicar of braddan, , niece of manx deemster. received education @ castletown grammar school , king william s college, being 1 of first pupils @ school.
career
on completion of schooling jeffcott studied law @ rolls office, under john mchutcheon, , called manx bar on may 9, 1839.
for considerable number of years jeffcott possessed largest legal practice in south of isle of man, , earned reputation sound , trustworthy lawyer. following resignation chief magistracy of james gell in 1865, jeffcott appointed high bailiff of castletown isle of man s lieutenant governor, henry loch. said of him high bailiff conduct upon bench distinguished utmost impartiality. chief magistrate of castletown kept watchful eye on interests , said ready take lead in advancement of town.
due various connections, jeffcott became member of house of keys castletown in 1855. @ time house of keys met in ancient capital of isle of man, castletown, , self elected. in 1866 keys chamber reformed resulted in house of keys election act of 1867. under new system jeffcott returned member castletown, again @ 1874 , 1881 elections (these last 2 occasions unopposed). member of manx legislature jeffcott s temperament , training gave conservative colour opinions , said of him opinions on local issues based on sound experience.
although not direct driving force, jeffcott had substantial influence in moulding of legislation @ critical period in history of isle of man, notably in reform movement led settlement of 1866. instance of jeffcott s service concerned construction of major works @ douglas harbour. during mid 1860s development of port of douglas issue said agitate entire island. member of harbour board jeffcott directly involved works proposed john coode.
jeffcott retired politics in 1882.
personal life
john jeffcott married lucy mylrea of orrisdale in parish michael. marriage produced 7 children, 5 daughters , 2 sons. elder son, named john jeffcott, became engineer in vancouver, british columbia, in service of pacific steam navigation company. other son, william lowther jeffcott, predeceased him in 1877. throughout life jeffcott had intense fondness of nature , botany. keen artist, taking sketch book him on numerous nature walks. in addition had strong passion antiquarian research, being regarded competent geologist , archaeologist. in 1878 became chairman of archaeological association , in capacity became heavily involved in report concerning archaeology of isle of man. in addition wrote guide mysteries of castle rushen. work of eminence delineation of character , description of unique meayll stone circle on mull hill , in addition highly knowledgeable regarding other historic sites particularly on cronk ny arrey laa. said keen angler , hunter.
in july 1850 jeffcott purchased land on western side of castletown , on constructed family home, crofton. appear jeffcott fell on hard times, in october 1885 , wife entered deed assigned , conveyed real estate trustees, sold satisfy charges upon it. in respect of crofton, jeffcott , wife entered deed of bond , security on mortgage £200. deed contained provision if other properties within deed realised sufficient funds satisfy amount outstanding, crofton not put sale , retained jeffcotts. unfortunately not case , on february 5, 1886, property sold @ auction. today crofton listed building.
death
during latter part of 1891 jeffcott began suffer declining health. health continued worsen 1892 , passed away @ home on tuesday may 17.
funeral
john moore jeffcott s funeral took place @ st mary s church, castletown on friday may 20, 1892. numerous dignitaries including various members of house of keys , members of judiciary in attendance. funeral service conducted reverend h.s. gill. following service body interred in churchyard of kirk arbory.
