world war ii

the squadron first activated @ mccook army air field, nebraska, in november 1943 861st bombardment squadron, 1 of original squadrons of 493d bombardment group. @ mccook, squadron began training consolidated b-24 liberator. on 1 january 1944 861st, less air echelon, transferred on paper european theater of operations.


in england, new ground personnel assigned. in mid-april moved squadron s permanent station @ raf debach, joined air echelon, had completed training, in may. unit began operations, chiefly against industrial , military installations in germany, including ordnance depot in magdeburg, marshalling yards near cologne, synthetic oil plants @ merseburg , factories in frankfurt.

strategic operations interrupted in late spring 1944 buildup operation overlord, invasion of normandy, when group struck artillery batteries. group hit enemy positions near front in operation cobra, breakout @ saint lo in july. in september squadron converted boeing b-17 flying fortress , bombed fortifications support operation market garden, airborne attacks in netherlands. attacked german lines of communications during battle of bulge december 1944 through january 1945 , in operation varsity, airborne assault across rhine in march 1945.


the squadron flew last combat mission on 20 april 1945, when struck marshalling yards @ nauen. squadron redeployed united states in august possible service in pacific, following vj day, inactivated @ sioux falls army air field on 28 august.


vietnam war

ec-47s in vietnam


activated in south vietnam in 1966. flew ec-47 aircraft equipped electronic countermeasures equipment on south vietnam. reassigned thailand in 1972 part of usaf draw-down in south vietnam. continued missions on indochina until 15 august 1973 when united states military flights on indochina halted congressional mandate. trained in thailand until inactivation on 30 june 1974.


global war on terror

the squadron reactivated 361st expeditionary reconnaissance squadron part of global war on terrorism in 2003. assigned first 407th air expeditionary group, later 451st air expeditionary group, squadron operated variety of intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance aircraft before united states pullout iraq in 2011 , afghanistan in 2014.
