the domesday book of 1086 records stapleton under name hundeslit. stapleton held 2 manors 2 saxon franklins, huning , aelric , in 1086 divided between roger fitz corbet , alward saxon. mound near church may have been site of 1 of saxon manor houses. other manor house stood mile away, remains of de stapleton s house still exists. place first recorded stapleton in reign of stephen, when baldwin de meisy lord of stapleton , wistanstow. descendants, took name of de stapleton, held manor till beginning of 15th century, when passed 6 co-heiresses, daughters of sir john stapleton.
