5S Toyota S engine

a 5s-fe engine in 1998 toyota celica gt

the 5s-fe available in several variations each being distinguished valve cover design. first generation, introduced in 1990–92 celica gt/gt-s , mr2, had power rating of 130 hp , 144 lbs-ft/torque. second generation introduced in 1993 fifth generation (st184) celica, , continued through sixth generation (st204) celica. second generation used in mr2 (sw21) , camry/scepter (xv10) series , had power output of 135 hp , 145 lbs-ft/torque. had less aggressive cams, no cold start injector, knock sensor, , more aggressive tuning give more power. in states had adopted california emission standards 5s-fe rated @ 130 hp , 145 lbs-ft/torque due emission equipment used meet emission regulations. third generation last 5s-fe engine produced , used in 1997–01 camry xv20 , 1999–01 camry solara; however, 1996 onward, engine received crank angle sensor instead of cam angle sensor smoother idle. 1997 1999 engine produced 133 hp @ 5,200 rpm , 147 lbs-ft/torque @ 4,400 rpm. 2000 2001, engine received modest improvements increase power output 136 hp @ 5,200 rpm , 150 lbs-ft/torque @ 4,400 rpm. 5s-fe replaced in applications 2.4 l 2az-fe.

california specification 1994-1996 5s-fes in celica , camry used air-assisted, 250 cc injectors, , sequential fuel injection reduced emissions on grouped (2+2) firing scheme. 1994-1995 mr2 did not receive change, nor did camrys/celicas in federal emissions states.

camry 5s-fes have counter-rotating balance shaft assembly reduce noise, vibration, , harshness. reduce 2nd order vibrations common 4-cylinder engines spinning @ double crankshaft speed. 1994-1999 celica , 1991-1995 mr2 5s-fes lack these balance shafts, 5s-fe engine balance shafts came camry.

in 1997, fourth generation camry, 5s-fe updated last time. engine received direct ignition system external camshaft , crankshaft sensors. system used waste-spark design, , coils had integrated igniters. engine did not use typical coil-on-plug design, rather 2 coil+igniter assemblies mounted near cylinder four, , provided spark via normal high-tension cords (spark plug wires). change means 1997-01 camry 5s-fe has blocked off distributor mounting hole , used older 5s-fes without swapping cylinder heads.

the 1997-99 camry 5s-fe continued air-assisted, 250 cc injectors. camry 5s-fe had factory 4-to-1 exhaust design - in federal form, had no pre-catalyst, although california version did replace collector design of federal version warm-up pre-catalyst reduced cold start emissions.

for 2000 toyota removed air-assisted injectors , moved superfine atomization (~50 micrometers), 12-hole, 235 cc injectors made denso. of different design, , required change in cylinder head casting.

for 2001 toyota started fitting factory mls (multi-layer steel) head gaskets , other metal gaskets layered viton engines, including 5s-fe. mls head gaskets require cylinder head , cylinder block resurfacing on older engines ensure proper sealing; consequently, mls head gasket did not supersede old composite head gasket.

the 1994-99 celica 5s-fe not updated these changes, , continued use distributor , older electronic control system , injectors. used engine marked 1997-01 camry 5s-fe distributor celica 5s-fe or older camry 5s-fe.
