this time on frontier ended in july 1889 when family moved washington, d.c., douglas attended force public school. father posted san antonio, texas, in september 1893. while there macarthur attended west texas military academy, awarded gold medal scholarship , deportment . participated on school tennis team, , played quarterback on school football team , shortstop on baseball team. named valedictorian, final year average of 97.33 out of 100. macarthur s father , grandfather unsuccessfully sought secure douglas presidential appointment united states military academy @ west point, first president grover cleveland , president william mckinley. after these 2 rejections, given coaching , private tutoring milwaukee high school teacher gertrude hull. passed examination appointment congressman theobald otjen, scoring 93.3 on test. later wrote: lesson never forgot. preparedness key success , victory.


macarthur entered west point on 13 june 1899, , mother moved there suite @ craney s hotel, overlooking grounds of academy. hazing widespread @ west point @ time, , macarthur , classmate ulysses s. grant iii singled out special attention southern cadets sons of generals mothers living @ craney s. when cadet oscar booz left west point after being hazed , subsequently died of tuberculosis, there congressional inquiry. macarthur called appear before special congressional committee in 1901, testified against cadets implicated in hazing, downplayed own hazing though other cadets gave full story committee. congress subsequently outlawed acts of harassing, tyrannical, abusive, shameful, insulting or humiliating nature , although hazing continued. macarthur corporal in company b in second year, first sergeant in company in third year , first captain in final year. played left field baseball team, , academically earned 2424.12 merits out of possible 2470.00 or 98.14, third highest score ever recorded, graduating first in 93-man class on 11 june 1903. @ time customary top-ranking cadets commissioned united states army corps of engineers, macarthur commissioned second lieutenant in corps.
