in 1810, @ beginning of independence movement, miguel hidalgo stayed in toluca few days on way battle of monte de las cruces. in 1811, group of indigenous natives of mexico shot , killed spanish royalists. in memorial killed in incident, place occurred named plaza of martires . in 1812, first city council of toluca installed. in 1821, independence proclaimed local authorities.


after creation of state of mexico in 1825, state capital moved different cities several times. until in 1830, toluca designated constitutional capital of state of mexico. in 1832, building of los portales started in downtown toluca. in 1836, because of centralization of mexican federal government, branches of government relocated mexico city after in toluca several years.


in 1847, ignacio ramírez, el nigromante or institute of literature opened. in 1851, teatro principal built gonzález arratia. mariano riva palacio named governor of state , started important modernization process of city in 19th century. in 1881, industrial union founded, railroad opened , bank of state of mexico created first bills in country. in 1882, teachers college founded. in 1910, people celebrated century of independence, , plaza españa inaugurated.
