born in weston-super-mare , 1 of 4 children, a. v. alexander son of albert alexander, blacksmith , later engineer had moved native wiltshire bristol during agricultural depression of 1860s , 1870s, , eliza jane thatcher, daughter of policeman. named after both father , prince albert victor, queen victoria s eldest grandson, known a. v. young age. parents had settled in weston when married, family moved bristol after albert alexander s death in august 1886. alexander s mother worked corset-maker provide children.
alexander attended barton hill school age of three, @ cost of 2 pence per week. against mother s wishes, chose not continue st. george s higher grade school in 1898, feeling increased weekly charge of 6 pence expensive , nothing more school. began work aged thirteen, first leather merchant, , 5 months later junior clerk bristol school board. in 1903 transferred somerset county council s newly formed local education authority, worked in school management department committee clerk. time keen chorister , footballer, , self-taught pianist. in later years, , until death, alexander vice-president of chelsea f.c. – role @ club taken on richard attenborough.
raised anglican, alexander converted baptist movement in 1908 after married esther ellen chapple, school teacher , baptist. married on 6 june 1908. daughter, beatrix, born in 1909, , son ronald lived 1911 1912. alexander joined weston co-operative society , became treasurer of local young liberal association in 1908, , local trades , labour council in 1909. elected board of weston co-op society in 1910.
he volunteered service when first world war began, not called-up until 2 years later. joined artists rifles, principally served train officers assignment other regiments. trained in london , studied @ magdalen college, oxford, before earning commission in labour corps in december 1917. health suffered during training, , never saw active service, instead working posting officer in lancashire. in november 1918 promoted captain, transferred general list, , became education officer, preparing wounded soldiers civilian life. demobbed in late 1919. within year of returning home, became vice-president of weston co-op society , secretary of somerset branch of nalgo.
