design

the doterel class designed nathaniel barnaby development of william henry white s 1874 osprey-class sloop. graceful clipper bow of ospreys replaced vertical stem , engines more powerful. hull of composite construction, wooden planks on iron frame.


propulsion

power provided 3 cylindrical boilers, supplied steam @ 60 pounds per square inch (410 kpa) two-cylinder horizontal compound-expansion steam engine driving single 13-foot-1-inch (3.99 m) screw. arrangement produced 1,020 indicated horsepower (760 kw) , top speed of 11 knots (20 km/h).


armament

ships of class armed 2 7-inch (90 cwt) muzzle-loading rifled guns on pivoting mounts, , 4 64-pounder muzzle-loading rifled guns (two on pivoting mounts, , 2 broadside). 4 machine guns , 1 light gun completed weaponry.


sail plan

all ships of class provided barque rig, is, square-rigged foremast , mainmast, , fore-and-aft sails on mizzen mast.


crew

miranda have had normal complement of 140–150 men.
