immediately after portage bridge fire, officials of erie railroad company moved replace wooden bridge iron , steel design. construction began june 8, 1875 , bridge opened traffic july 31, 1875. bridge 820 feet (250 m) long , 240 feet (73 m) high. still in use today (as of january 2016). despite weight restriction, 400-ton nickel plate 765 passed on bridge passenger coaches part of heritage excursion in august 2015.
