biography
early life

gary louris grew in toledo, ohio, took piano lessons before becoming guitarist teenager. graduated st. john s jesuit high school in 1973.


1985–present: jayhawks

the jayhawks formed in 1985 in minneapolis, minnesota. louris had formerly played guitar in rockabilly band, safety last. on may 13, 2003, jayhawks appeared on late show david letterman , performed save rainy day , rainy day music cd. jayhawks recorded 7 albums before going on indefinite hiatus in 2005.


in 2011 jayhawks reunited , recorded new album, mockingbird time. lineup consisted of mark olson, gary louris, marc perlman, karen grotberg, , tim o reagan. @ time louris said, our goal make best jayhawks album s ever been done . eighteen songs recorded, 16 of them new, 12 included on record. band toured in support of album.


olson left jayhawks again in late 2012 , band went on short hiatus. reformed in 2014 support reissues of 3 jayhawks albums released between 1997 , 2003. after year of touring of 1997 lineup band announced working on new studio album, paging mr. proust, released on april 29, 2016 on thirty tigers.


2005–present: solo career

louris member of intermittent midwest musical collective golden smog; other members have included fellow jayhawk marc perlman, jeff tweedy of wilco, dave pirner , dan murphy soul asylum, kraig johnson of run westy run , chris mars of replacements.


in spring 2005, louris , olson toured together, billed jayhawks: evening mark olson & gary louris, again.


he co-wrote song jealous of moon chris thile in 2005, , appeared on nickel creek album why should fire die?. louris songwriter on 2006 dixie chicks album taking long way.


louris wrote , performed every word, theme song 2006 documentary wordplay.


in 2008, louris released first solo album, vagabonds. album produced black crowes frontman chris robinson. of vagabonds, louris said in interview, “it wasn’t intention recapture ’70s or anything, that’s comes out when sing....once got band sessions, reminded me of how jayhawks when started out. music new , exciting them, , me feed off of that.” vagabonds recorded in laurel canyon, famous being center of 1970s singer-songwriter scene.


robinson produced collaboration between louris , former jayhawks bandmate mark olson. album, ready flood, released in november 2008 (january 2009 in u.s.).


on touring, louris said, m not touring anymore. found m not in band that. type of musician m not ad libs , creates. m more recreator when tour tend recreate parts ve written touring , playing live fun me point.


louris continued play occasional solo shows during periods of jayhawks activity. in 2015, louris formed side project called au pair durham musician django haskins band old ceremony. released album, 1 armed candy bear, in november 2015 on thirty tigers followed handful of live shows.
