palmer declared candidacy 6th district following retirement announcement of 11-term incumbent spencer bachus. in republican primary election—the real contest in heavily republican district—palmer finished second behind state representative paul demarco. in ensuing runoff election, palmer picked support of club growth. palmer won runoff election margin of 64% 36%. in november 4, 2014 general election, palmer defeated democratic nominee mark lester, history professor @ birmingham-southern college, 76% 24%.
