as vh1 smooth (1998–1999)

vh1 smooth launched on august 1, 1998 part of suite digital package, delaying original launch date of july 31, 1998. channel focused on smooth jazz, new age, , adult contemporary music. first music video play on channel cover of makin whoopee branford marsalis.


as vh1 classic (1999–2016)

relaunched on january 15, 1999 vh1 classic rock, channel featured mainstream rock/adult hits-formatted mix of music videos , concert footage 1970s through mid-1990s, though included wider range of genres , time periods. channel name changed vh1 classic in 2000.


the network played music videos upon launch, expanded varied line-up of music-themed programs. included themed music video compilation blocks (with categories such heavy metal music, or popular music of 1980s), full-length concerts, music documentaries such classic albums , behind music series, music-oriented movies (such purple rain , blues brothers), , original talk show, metal show. re-broadcast programs first shown on main vh1 channel, including pop-up video , love 80s.


from january 28 february 15, 2015, vh1 classic aired 433-hour, nineteen-day marathon of saturday night live in celebration of show s fortieth anniversary. result, network broke previous record longest continuous marathon in television history set fxx s twelve-day marathon of simpsons.


as mtv classic (2016–present)

in july 2016, viacom announced on august 1, 35th anniversary of original mtv s launch, network rebrand mtv classic. channel s programming continues focus on classic music videos , programming (including notable episodes of mtv unplugged , storytellers), skews more towards 1980s, 1990s , mid-2000s. rebranded network schedule included encores of past mtv original series such 2011 beavis , butt-head revival , laguna beach: real orange county. network s relaunch took place @ 6:00 a.m. et rebroadcast of mtv s first hour on air, simulcast on mtv , online via facebook live streaming, branded mtv hour 1 (the channel, vh1 classic, had aired mark network s 30th anniversary in 2011). several vh1 classic programs retained in existing schedule, albeit in late night hours.


three days leading january 1, 2017, mtv classic aired 24-hour block decade-a-thons consisting of music videos 1980s leading 2000s. afterwards, mtv classic unveiled new automated all-video schedule, of older mtv , vh1 classic series content removed.


as of end of 2016, channel least-watched english-language channel on of american cable, averaging 30–35,000 viewers on average night in primetime (a decline of third already-low numbers vh1 classic had netted in 2015), factor in network abandoning new format after 5 months. of end of may 2017, numbers have slipped further average of 14,000 viewers per night, ahead of moribund esquire network , bein sports, @ time of year in non-prime sports season. low numbers halved end of july 2017, month s ratings showed averaging 7,000 viewers per night, ahead of bein networks.
