ellsworth appointed professor of law @ trinity college in 1827, position held until death. law partner starting in 1817 brother-in-law chief justice of connecticut supreme court thomas scott williams, elected u.s. congress year , sought younger partner manage practice in absence. (judge williams married ellsworth s sister.) aged 26, ellsworth took reins of congressman williams law practice, largest in state.


as anti-jacksonian ellsworth elected twenty-first, twenty-second, , twenty-third united states congresses , served march 4, 1829, july 8, 1834 when resigned.


ellsworth elected governor of connecticut 1838-1842. during tenure, progressive method voter registration constituted , school commission founded.


in 1847, elsworth became judge of connecticut supreme court , served 1847 1861, when, constitutional provision relative age, retired. twice declined accept nomination united states senate, , retired public life.
