in 1988, christic institute ordered pay $955,000 in attorneys fees , $79,500 in court costs result of $24 million lawsuit deemed frivolous united states district court southern district of florida. ruling subsequently upheld united states court of appeals eleventh circuit , supreme court of united states. in addition, institute lost non-profit status, irs ruled suit had been politically motivated.


in wake of loss, daniel sheehan , sara nelson regrouped. in 1992 became leaders of christic institute s successor organization, romero institute.
