the vijay stambha (tower of victory) or jaya stambha, called symbol of chittor , particularly bold expression of triumph, erected rana kumbha between 1458 , 1468 commemorate victory on mahmud shah khalji, sultan of malwa, in 1440 ad. built on period of ten years, raises 37.2 metres (122 ft) on 47 square feet (4.4 m) base in 9 stories accessed through narrow circular staircase of 157 steps (the interior carved) 8th floor, there view of plains , new town of chittor. dome, later addition, damaged lightning , repaired during 19th century. stamba illuminated during evenings , gives beautiful view of chittor top.
