ucla s original residence hall hershey hall, located on hilgard avenue in south campus. named after mira hershey, bequeathed $300,000 have all-women dorm built. original hershey hall of 1930s still in use today academic building. however, west wing added later demolished make way terasaki life sciences building. men s wing, built in 1959, located in current site of parking garage 2.
today, ucla’s entire undergraduate residential community located on ridge on northwestern edge of campus called “the hill.” hill consists of 17 high-rise towers , 5 low-rise residential complexes housing 11,000 residents; dining halls; commons buildings containing student services, conference facilities, , classrooms; facilities recreational , varsity sports; southern regional library; , tom bradley international hall, contains services foreign students.
student life on hill under care of residential life (reslife), formerly called office of residential life (orl) . currently, incoming first-year students guaranteed 3 years of on-campus housing , incoming transfer students guaranteed 1 year of housing. housing master plan aims guarantee housing undergraduates 4 years 2014.
the hill underwent northwest campus in-fill project, added additional 1,525 beds, 10 faculty in-residence apartments, 750-seat dining hall, , 4 residential towers in 2013. @ point, ucla able house 12,000 undergraduates, , begin plans provide four-year housing guarantee incoming freshmen. 2 of these buildings, holly ridge , gardenia way, part of de neve plaza, opened february 2012. other two, sproul cove , sproul landing, completed in september 2013. sproul cove stands on previously-unoccupied ridge below rieber hall. sproul landing stands on former site of office of residential life, has relocated tom bradley international hall.

built in 1959, dykstra /ˈdaɪkstrə/ first dorm located on hill, first co-ed residence hall in united states. hall named after ucla provost clarence dykstra. though classified own separate building, considered part of de neve plaza practical purposes, since adjacent de neve buildings , physically connected de neve commons (which happens contiguous acacia view , birch heights). also, front desk , mailroom services, recreational rooms, , closest dining options dykstra residents in de neve commons. dykstra reopened 2013-2014 school year after year of renovations.

there 3 different living options undergraduates, each providing different levels of social interaction, noise level, , privacy.
there traditional high-rise halls, students grouped floors, sharing gender-specific bathroom 40-50 others. buildings of sort include: dykstra hall, hedrick hall, rieber hall, , sproul hall. recently, deluxe residential hall format has been introduced, has features of residential plaza, such more spacious rooms , thermostat in each room control air-conditioning. configuration found in new buildings of de neve gardenia way, de neve holly ridge, sproul cove, , sproul landing.
the second configuration plaza, has same general amenities halls, has more spacious rooms, , has private bathroom or shared bathroom adjacent room. twelve plaza buildings include: hedrick summit, rieber terrace, rieber vista, residential buildings in sunset village, , residential buildings in de neve plaza except holly , gardenia.
there suites, standalone units supporting 4-6 students, private bathroom , living space. complex comprises several buildings sharing laundry room , outdoor recreational amenities. configuration found in hitch suites , saxon suites.
resident assistants
each floor or community on hill overseen 1 or 2 residential assistants (depending on community size). these ras students staff work incorporate reslife s core 5 principles living environment. typically, these ras host programs (events) encourage residents meet each other, explore la , academically successful. classic programs include visiting santa monica, going ropes course @ sunset rec or getting free massages during midterms. these resident assistants go through extensive , competitive interview , training process prior getting position.
