the church rock uranium mill spill 1 of worst radioactive spills in u.s. history. on july 16, 1979, tailings pond @ church rock uranium mill, owned united nuclear corporation, breached dam , 93 million gallons (350,000 m) of radioactive, acidic uranium tailings solution flowed north fork of puerco river. approximately 1,100 short tons (1,000 t) of uranium mine waste contaminated 250 acres (100 ha) of land , 50 miles (80 km) of puerco river.
