following marriage of older sister mary harvard professor cornelius conway felton (later president of harvard university), began socializing group of intellectuals in cambridge, massachusetts. in 1846, met scientist louis agassiz @ dinner mary , husband. though wanted marry, still had wife , 3 children (pauline, ida , alexander) in switzerland. wife died in 1848. in december 1849—when socially acceptable wed—lizzie s father gave blessing. married on april 25, 1850 in boston, massachusetts @ king s chapel.


agassiz organized household , took care of finances , children. developed strong relationships step-children, alexander, ida, , pauline, , grandchildren. had no children of own. traveled husband , family charleston, south carolina professorship in medical school throughout winters of 1851-1852 , 1852-1853. visited europe him in 1859. worked closely husband in scientific research. specifically, accompanied louis agassiz main writer , record keeper thayer expedition brazil (april 1865–august 1866) , hassler expedition through strait of magellan (december 1871–august 1872).


after husband s death in 1873, continued devote time work , family. continued enjoy traveling, , in 1892, elizabeth cabot agassiz ventured family pacific coast, california, 3 months. died on june 27, 1907 in arlington, massachusetts of cerebral hemorrhage.
