as mattel, inc. executive, joe cristina’s professional life has centered on children more 22 years. in 1993, joe faced dilemma—his health had been deteriorating due hiv, had lost 2 life partners aids, , contemplating quiet disability leave.


but boss, jill barad (then president of mattel), proposed instead joe take few weeks off think wanted rest of life , trust friends , business colleagues there support him. joe decided publicly disclose hiv+ status, , overwhelmed enormous outpouring of support received. response same: “what can help?”


joe realized being faced once in lifetime opportunity make difference in world. encouragement , support received @ mattel , throughout children’s industry inspired him. inspiration, along improvement in health due advent of “hiv cocktail therapy”, convinced him stay @ mattel , find way mobilize network of diverse resources make positive difference in lives of children affected hiv/aids. hence, children affected aids foundation born. through joe’s vision , leadership, foundation has raised more $33 million since inception. in 2007, joe’s health again began falter due long-term effects of hiv coupled medication side effects, , became necessary him go on extended medical leave mattel. joe focuses of time , energy on taking care of health , continuing children affected hiv/aids. mattel, inc. continues provide major funding , support foundation.
