the hills composed of range of sandstones of permian , triassic age. north–south faulting in part responsible elevating harder-wearing strata above general level of cheshire plain. typically higher summits formed helsby sandstone.
the ridge acted of barrier passage of irish sea ice during last ice age , hills etched numerous glacial meltwater channels, many of formed subglacially. particularly spectacular examples @ urchin s kitchen in primrosehill woods , @ holbitch slack near cotebrook.
