collection
the museum collection has evolved 17th , 18th century applied arts towards modern , contemporary design 1860 till now. objects prior 1860 provide historic basis on modern , contemporary design engrafted. design museum gent prefers use broad definition of design, based on series of criteria can - more or lesser degree - found in design product: contemporaneity, innovation, ergonomics, durability , aesthetic relevance. both serial products , unique objects can comply these requirements. innovation can relate form, function, material , production techniques. purchases , exhibitions focused on 20th century , contemporary creations.
extension of collection
the collection of design museum gent took shape in 3 phases:
ln first phase, between 1903 , 1930, museum possesses collection , corresponding library in view of musée des modèles , paying close attention large variety of furniture types dating 1600 - 1800 , particular subcollections such art nouveau, asian objects, textile , french art deco.
between 1930 , 1974, museum collection barely extended, not in least owing closure between 1958 , 1973.
the third , final phase between 1974 , 2013 characterised impressive expansion of international design collection major purchases , donations. 1977 onwards, museum curator (and later museum director) lieven daenens acquires significant belgian art nouveau ensembles designed henry van de velde, victor horta , paul hankar. ln 1987, interior , furniture designer pieter de bruyne bequeaths archives designer , lecturer, along comprehensive library , various furniture. ln same year, passionate collector n.f. havermans legates rich collection of art nouveau , art deco glassware, ceramics , silver. between 1980 , 2000, collection expanded national , international designers. italian radical design designer collectives alchimia , memphis (including mendini, branzi , sottsass) constitutes major extension of museum collection. appointment of katrien laporte (2013 -) new museum director initiates catching-up process regard 1970 onwards collection of belgian design.

in period starting 1975, collection has been expanded 22,000 objects. collection includes applied arts , design dating 1450 present, regionally, nationally , internationally diversified , highly consistent. collection in belgium display intelligible , coherent image of trend-setting design starting art nouveau. moreover, includes several unique top-class objects of national , international design. historic subcollection (1450-1900) stands out because of broad range of 18th century furniture. proto-design 1860 onwards step-up towards modern design collection, initiated impressive art nouveau collection , continues till today. collection includes western european design, distinct presence of belgium, netherlands, france, scandinavia , italy. collection focuses on interior-oriented design private residences , offices.
