john born on 11 july 1740, second son of john, first earl gower, third wife lady mary tufton, daughter of thomas tufton, 6th earl of thanet , widow of anthony grey, earl harold. half-brother, granville leveson-gower, inherited father s earldom , use political influence john s career. john privately educated , entered navy, receiving lieutenant s commission in 1758. first command fireship hms salamander, in saw action @ battle of lagos on 18 august 1759, serving under admiral edward boscawen. leveson-gower advanced rank of post captain on 30 june 1760 , took 32-gun hms quebec mediterranean serve under sir charles saunders. while commanding quebec captured 18-gun french privateer phoenix in december 1760 off cape palos.


leveson-gower commanded 64-gun hms africa, sailing guinea , west indies in 1765. later commanded frigates hms aeolus , hms pearl, , guardship hms albion @ plymouth in 1774. appointed command 74-gun hms valiant in english channel in 1775, captured several american ships. present @ battle of ushant on 17 july 1778, supported admiral augustus keppel, valiant sustaining casualties of 6 killed , twenty-six wounded. gave evidence @ keppel s subsequent court martial, defending admiral s actions, , resigned command afterwards.
