syslog message components

the information provided originator of syslog message includes facility code , severity level. syslog software adds information information header before passing entry syslog receiver. such components include originator process id, timestamp, , hostname or ip address of device.


facility

a facility code used specify type of program logging message. messages different facilities may handled differently. list of facilities available defined rfc 3164:



the mapping between facility code , keyword not uniform between operating systems , different syslog implementations.


severity level

the list of severities defined rfc 5424:



the meaning of severity levels other emergency , debug relative application. example, if purpose of system process transactions update customer account balance information, error in final step should assigned alert level. however, error occurring in attempt display zip code of customer may assigned error or warning level.


the server process handles message (syslogd) includes lower (more severe) levels. is, if messages separated individual severity, warning level entry included in notice, info , debug processing.


message (msg)

from rfc 3164, message component (known msg) specified having these fields: tag, should name of program or process generated message, , content contains details of message.


described in rfc 5424 (march 2009), msg called content in rfc 3164 . rfc states:

the content field should encoded in utf-8 character set , octet values in traditional ascii control character range should avoided.
