anciently, vale of megget known rodonna, , formed favourite hunting-ground of scottish sovereigns, until deer extirpated or became scarce in reign of queen mary. ancient barony of rodonna, comprising vale of megget, granted alexander ii melrose abbey in 1236.
before union england defensive towers built in megget, serving both watch towers , signalling stations. tower @ cramalt mentioned in 1530 , 1555 , remains visible until inundation megget reservoir. has been partially reconstructed above shoreline of reservoir.
at henderland, in east of parish, there ruin of church, surrounded cemetery. before 1810 there no other remains of ecclesiastical edifice , assumed ancient church of megget. chapel @ henderland on north bank of megget, not far confluence st mary’s loch. on tombstone found in ruins in mid 18th century, sculptured cross , sword, legend here lyes perys of cokburne , wyfe marjory.
this district, apparently chapelry before reformation, appears have been assigned anciently parish of traquair. in mid 17th century there references henderland , other places in megget being described in parish of st bride of traquair, seem district had belonged.
in 1614 recorded john fawsyde minister of rodonno, henderland, or megget; newlands , kirkurd under care.
by act of scottish parliament of 1621, parish of rodonno or megget joined of lyne, parish 14 miles north without proper connecting road. union took place in consequence of joint petition proprietor of both parishes, lord hay, of yester, , inhabitants of megget lords commissioners plantation of kirks, desiring megget might henceforth part of lyne. unique megget not united 1 of neighbouring parishes, instead parish distant it. smallness of stipends might have been reason, both parishes belonged wholly same proprietor, lord hay of yester, and, more probable, had considerable influence in procuring annexation.
for 270 years lyne , megget formed united parish, because of physical separation, megget had attributes of parish. other parishes registration district. reported in 1839, commissioners found church in lyne , chapel in megget operated independently own arrangements, common minister attended megget 1 sunday in three. none of parishioners of meggett attended church in lyne.
following review boundary commission, union of 2 parishes dissolved order came operation on 15 may 1891. ordered detached part of parish of lyne , megget ceased part of parish , of county of peebles; instead form part of parish of yarrow , of county of selkirk, while remainder of lyne , megget known parish of lyne.
however change did not @ first disturb ecclesiastical arrangements. 1901 census reported ecclesiastically lyne , megget continued exist, 1 part in peeblesshire in (civil) parish of lyne, while part in selkirkshire in (civil) parish of yarrow. then, after first world war memorial erected in lyne church entitled: parish of lyne , megget, european war 1914, roll of honour. war memorial erected in megget district.
after union of united free church of scotland , church of scotland in 1929, number of congregations merged, churches , chapels being closed or sub-ordinated others. megget ecclesiastical parish disjoined lyne in 1948 , in same year megget united yarrow , lyne united manor. chapel in megget closed , free church @ cappercleuch became local place of worship, served minister of parish of yarrow.
