fort san opened in 1917 during time when tuberculosis infections increasing, , built house 358 patients. self-sufficient institution vegetable gardens, livestock, power house, , extensive library patients provided world war veterans. fort san medical purgatory hundreds died , thousands suffered. isolation, loneliness , pain way of life citizens; of whom lost years of lives, if not life itself.


saskatchewan summer school of arts

after tuberculosis became less of threat in 1960s, sanatorium building s purpose changed house saskatchewan summer school of arts in 1967. thirty years, thousands of young people received summer tuition in dance, music, visual art, writing , theatre. through 1970s facilities expanded , improved support school on 30 years. on 1,200 children , adults attended seven-week program @ school during summer of 1968. school closed in 1991 due lack of funding. sage hill writing experience 1 of spin-offs of school continued operate using variety of venues around province. existing facilities expanded , improved throughout 1970s popularity of school increased.

fort san run royal canadian sea cadet camp named hmcs qu appelle cadet summer training centre during summers of nineties 2004. programs offered were:



music
sailing
general training

one of operating rooms converted 4 bunk barrack room , cadets taking sailing or general training slept directly on morgue.


it urban legend fort san haunted patients died there in years. several authors have documented different accounts of strange occurrences transpired in time since retired sanatorium.


echo valley conference centre

the echo valley conference centre, provincial government run conference facility operated out of historic building on site. conference centre makes use of arts , craft/tudor revival style building built 1912 1922 use sanitarium. on september 30, 2004 decision made saskatchewan property management corporation shut down centre , offer sale.
