Description St Augustine's Anglican Church, Leyburn

leyburn rural village on southern reaches of darling downs, 50 km northwest of warwick, on banks of canal creek. st. augustine s church located on north-eastern approach village toowoomba, dove street. church timber of outside stud framing on low timber stumps steeply pitched gabled roof clad in hardwood shingles. reputedly styled on english village churches of period, expressing many gothic elements in vernacular form of construction.

the church positioned centrally within site, slopes gently east. nave orientated east-west, chancel @ eastern end , dove street west. entrance site through timber arched gateway small pine tree , short bay of picket fencing either side. remainder of fencing of timber rails. there several saplings perimeter fence, , clump of eucalypts northern side. east of site small weatherboard store, , memorial gold miner dan bray under open shelter roofed in shingles.


the church simple rectilinear form, chancel eastern end , porch south of western end. addition housing vestry south-east corner. wall framing of studs, noggings , bracing exposed exterior of building, , purposefully arranged decorative element further emphasised contrasting colour. wall cladding interior of framing pit-sawn planks of cypress pine, 250mm (10 ) wide, laid horizontally. roof steeply pitched gable ends, , timber bell-cote spire @ western end. roof clad in hand-split hardwood shingles. entry door south porch boarded , ledged door lancet head, , still furnishing original bolt , rimlock. inside, nave has special quality of light created continuous opening between top of walls , roof framing, sides , gable ends. tall, narrow windows hand painted stipple pattern contribute light. these windows have trefoil heads applied outside, giving them gothic-like shadow internally. open sliding along tracks inside of wall. floor of wide raw cypress pine boards, hand-scrubbed clean retain bleached appearance. exposed roof framing , trusses have been stained. major members stop chamfered. trusses feature twisted vertical tie rods. chancel arch, of lancet form, lined beaded board.

the furniture reputedly dates church s establishment. altar, lectern, pulpit , pews of stained pine. west end of aisle movable stone baptism font. altar has been moved away apse face congregation. original timber screen altar presently stored in vestry. rear of altar there stained glass windows. side walls of chancel gas lamps on swivelling brackets. later addition of vestry lined narrow boards. houses dresser, washstand, bed, wardrobe, , bellows organ. stored here original gas lamps roof, , dedication chalice , plate.
