the destroyer life extension (delex) refit born out of need extend life of steam-powered destroyer escorts of canadian navy in 1980s until next generation of surface ship built. encompassing classes based on initial st. laurent (the remaining st. laurent, restigouche, mackenzie, , annapolis-class vessels), delex upgrades meant improve ability combat modern soviet submarines, , allow them continue operate part of nato task forces.
nipigon underwent delex refit in 1982 , annapolis followed in 1984. annapolis class received same sensor , communications upgrades others in st laurent family of ships received, including installation of new tactical data system (adlips), updated radars , sonars, fire control , satellite navigation. received new canadian tactical towed array sensor or cantass long-range towed sonar array affixed stern, replaced older vds. class received new lattice mast. an/sps-503 radar installed, an/sps-10d replaced older, an/sps-10 model. an/sqs-502, an/sqs-503 , sqs-10/11 sonars removed , replaced an/sqs-505(v) in fixed dome below waterline. installation of 2 adlips units allowed vessels better integrate nato units.
they given 12.75-inch (324 mm) torpedo tubes allow them fire mark 46 torpedoes. however, limbo mortar removed in order install cantass. visibly altered overall appearance of ships. an/sqr-504 replaced cantass. super rboc chaff system installed during refit.
