subsequent muslim conquests helped spread islam throughout region. region ruled dynasties of bengal sultanate , feudal lords under delhi sultanate next few hundred years. bengal sultanate interrupted period of twenty years hindu uprising under raja ganesha. in 16th century, mughal general islam khan conquered bengal. administration governors appointed court of mughal empire gave way semi-independence under nawabs of murshidabad, nominally respected sovereignty of mughals in delhi. several independent hindu states established in bengal during mughal period, including of pratapaditya of jessore district , raja sitaram ray of bardhaman. koch dynasty in northern bengal flourished during 16th , 17th centuries; weathered mughals , survived until advent of british colonial era.
