pre-troubles
creggan built provide housing growing population of londonderry. there nationalist majority in city, unionist minority londonderry corporation wanted ensure kept control of city. when bogside became overcrowded in 1940s-1960s, corporation agreed put nationalist , catholic families in housing, in same ward bogside. ensured continued unionist control of londonderry corporation. process known gerrymandering.
as use of gerrymandering corporation, there use of restricted franchise government, rate payers had right vote. male head of family (or matriarch if male dead), person in name rent book held, registered vote. no other adult in same household vote. middle class , upper class people owned more 1 property in city had right vote more once.
while political dimension important, lack of suitable housing people, nationalists, pressing problem, married couples living parents or family had housing in new estates. type of social injustice gave rise civil rights movement in city in 1960s.
the troubles
the civil rights movement occurring in northern ireland in late 60s, took place consistently in derry. led outbreak of violence between police, local unionist supporters , nationalists. violence in city started in bogside spread out rest of city, included creggan. 1 of these occurrences during 12–14 august 1969 became known battle of bogside. disagreement on defending nationalists british state forces , elements of unionism led split in ira, , 2 new paramilitary organizations became known official ira , provisional ira.
in years, 1969-72, officials prominent in creggan , rest of northern ireland militant members such joe mccann carrying attacks out on british army, though provisionals whole carrying out more violent campaign along bombing campaign in derry city centre. following introduction of internment without trial being carried out in british government, bogside , creggan became no-go area british government , controlled , policed both wings of ira. existed until operation motorman in july 1972. after this, no-go area across ulster became controlled british government. however, did not @ stop violence in city. in 1972 officials called ceasefire, in 1974 called end armed campaign. prompted creation of irish national liberation army, radical left wing group formed of hardliner republicans led seamus costello. 1972, after motorman, british army conducted large scale operations in once no-go areas. caused more open clashes between british army, citizens of creggan , rest of derry. violence continued occur 1990s.
subsequent history
creggan has experienced seismic change; long gone no-go area , levels of inequality suffered 1960s-1980s. has seen redevelopment noticeably redevelopment of bishop s field sports , recreation area, introduction of play park , development of country park , fishery @ old reservoir sites @ edge of estate.
new housing developments have been completed on edge of estate, largest of these being new ballymagowan area.
schools in area have been redeveloped , investment has gone providing first class education school children across derry.
the area mistakenly believed stronghold dissident republican activity; however, not case there no support return violence among majority of residents in estate.
