according legend, first chapel @ rosazzo built 800 hermit called alemanno. convent of augustinian canons (monasterium rosarum) established around 960, when area became part of imperial march of verona. monastery church dedicated saint peter consecrated in 1070; elevated rank of abbey aquileia patriarch ulrich of eppenstein 1090. @ time, premises settled benedictine monks descending millstatt abbey in carinthia, ulrich s brother liutold duke.


under benedictine rule abbey prospered , held large estates in gorizia hills (collio), in istria , around tarvisio. in 1245 monastery put under immediate papal authority pope innocent iv. however, autonomy of rosazzo ended in 1391, when convent transferred in commendam of archdiocese of ravenna. 1420, friuli region occupied republic of venice , later incorporated domini di terraferma. devastated blaze in 1509, premises abandoned , re-settled dominican brothers 1522 onwards. 1823 rosazzo served summer residence of bishops of udine.


part of kingdom of italy 1866, manzano site during world war i, 29 july 1917, first arditi units of royal italian army formed , trained. event still celebrated on last sunday in july. rosazzo abbey heavily damaged 1976 friuli earthquake, restored under auspices of udine archbishop alfredo battisti.
