during buddhist crisis of 1963, trí garnered considerable notoriety crackdown on buddhist protests against diệm regime in central region of vietnam. in huế, demonstrations banned , trí s forces ordered arrest engaged in civil disobedience. @ 13:00 on 3 june, 1,500 protestors attempted march towards từ Đàm pagoda in huế rally, having gathered @ bến ngự bridge near perfume river. confrontation ensued when protestors attempted cross bridge. 6 waves of arvn tear gas , attack dogs failed disperse crowd. @ 18:30, military personnel @ scene dispersed crowd emptying vials of brownish-red liquid on heads of praying protestors, resulting in 67 buddhists being hospitalised chemical injuries. symptoms consisted of severe blistering of skin , respiratory ailments. midnight, tensions high curfews , martial law enacted. rumours circulated 3 people had been killed. newsweek reported police had lobbed blister gas crowd. incident raised concerns among americans poison gas used, , u.s. threatened publicly condemn , distance saigon. investigation, however, cleared troops of using blister or poison gas.


the main raids in saigon accompanied attacks across country. under trí, violence worse in huế in capital. approach of trí s forces met beating of buddhist drums , cymbals alert populace. townsfolk left homes in middle of night in attempt defend city s pagodas. @ từ Đàm pagoda, base of leading buddhist activist leader, thích trí quang, monks tried cremate per custom coffin of colleague had self-immolated. arvn soldiers, firing m1 rifles, overran pagoda , confiscated coffin. demolished statue of gautama buddha , looted , vandalized pagoda before detonating explosives , leveling of pagoda. number of buddhists shot or clubbed death.


the determined resistance occurred outside diệu Đế pagoda in huế. troops attempted erect barricade across bridge leading pagoda, crowd fought heavily armed military personnel rocks, sticks , bare fists, throwing tear gas grenades aimed @ them. after five-hour battle, military took bridge @ dawn driving armored cars through angry crowd. defense of bridge , diệu Đế left estimated 30 dead , 200 wounded. ten truckloads of bridge defenders taken jail , estimated 500 people arrested in city. seventeen of 47 professors @ huế university, had resigned earlier in week in protest after firing of school s rector, father cao văn luân, catholic priest , opponent of diệm s brother archbishop pierre martin ngô Đình thục, arrested. despite vigorous application of diệm s military policies against buddhists in central vietnam, in words of ellen hammer, trí ruled...with iron hand , still involved in plotting against regime before attacks on pagodas.
