Structure Third ventricle
1 structure
1.1 development
1.2 boundaries
1.3 protrusions
structure
the third ventricle communicates lateral ventricles anteriorly interventricular foramina (of monro). communicates fourth ventricle posteriorly cerebral aqueduct (of sylvius).
development
the third ventricle, other parts of ventricular system of brain, develops central neural canal of neural tube. specifically, originates portion of tube present in developing prosencephalon, , subsequently in developing diencephalon.
boundaries
third ventricle
the third ventricle bounded thalamus , hypothalamus on both left , right sides. lamina terminalis forms anterior wall. floor formed hypothalamic structures. roof formed ependyma, lining undersurface of tela choroidea of third ventricle.
protrusions
there 2 protrusions on anterior aspect of third ventricle:
the supra-optic recess (above optic chiasma)
the infundibular recess (above pituitary stalk).
additionally, there 2 protrusions on posterior aspect, above cerebral aqueduct:
the suprapineal recess (above pineal gland)
the pineal recess (protruding stalk of pineal gland)
in casts of ventricular system, small hole may seen in body of third ventricle. formed 2 thalami joined @ interthalamic adhesion (not seen in people).
