ashton defeated liberal candidate, tina keeper, partly due vote splitting former ndp member of parliament bev desjarlais. however, defeated keeper in 2008 election.


dennis kshyk (charleswood—st. james—assiniboia)

kshyk born in 2 hills, alberta , educated @ northern alberta institute of technology. joined workers compensation board of manitoba in 1991, , still employed there of 2006 election. has served residential tenancy appeal commission, , has been chief shop steward of canadian union of public employees (cupe) local 1063.


kshyk campaigned new democratic party of manitoba in 1999 , 2003 provincial election, , finished respectable second against progressive conservative party leader stuart murray on latter occasion. first campaigned federal new democratic party in 2000 election, , finished fourth against liberal incumbent john harvard. in 2006, finished third against conservative steven fletcher.

darren van den bussche (portage—lisgar)

van den bussche born , raised in portage—lisgar area, , full-time firefighter in portage la prairie. certified medical technician, , once worked privately funded ambulance service. partly result of experience, committed supporter of public health delivery, , has been quoted saying, i’ve seen can happen private service because they’re there profit , have answer shareholders .


active in labour movement, van den bussche has been area vice-president of manitoba federation of labour, , president of portage labour council. founder , coach of portage youth scrimmage hockey.


he first campaigned ndp in 2004 election, after defeating 2 other candidates win party s portage—lisgar nomination. spoke out against north american free trade agreement (nafta) , western alienation (winnipeg free press, 22 june 2004), , finished third against conservative brian pallister. achieved same result in 2006.



patrick o connor (provencher)

o connor educated @ university of manitoba, studying mathematics , physics. worked computer programmer in university s physics (cyclotron) department 6 years, , employee of atomic energy of canada ltd. (aecl) 1975 1998, specializing in nuclear waste research.


in 1997, o connor made ambivalent comments aecl s proposal store nuclear waste in canadian shield. argued plan technologically possible, skeptical of whether funded government (winnipeg free press, 28 january 1997).


stationed @ pinawa during career aecl, o connor has been president of provencher ndp association of period since 1975. served on executive of beausejour consumers co-op between 1980 , 1988, , president 1983. received 5,259 votes (13.71%) in 2006, finishing second against conservative incumbent vic toews.
