the african golden cat twice size of domestic cat. rounded head small in relation body size. heavily built cat, stocky, long legs, relatively short tail, , large paws. body length varies within range 61 101 cm (24 40 in). tail length ranges 16 46 cm (6.3 18.1 in), , shoulder height 38 55 cm (15 22 in). cat weighs around 5.5 16 kg (12 35 lb), males being larger females.


the african golden cat has variable fur color, ranging chestnut or reddish-brown, greyish brown dark slaty. spotted, spotting ranging faded tan heavy black in color. in others spotting pattern limited belly , inner legs. undersides , areas around eyes, cheeks, chin, , throat lighter in color white. tail darker on top , either heavily banded, lightly banded, or plain, ending in black tip. cats in western parts of range tend have heavier spotting in eastern areas. 2 color morphs, red , grey phase, once thought indicate separate species, rather variations of same species. melanistic individuals occur, not common. despite wide variation in coat color, pelts of african golden cats can identified presence of distinctive whorled ridge of fur in front of shoulders, hairs change direction.


overall, african golden cat resembles caracal, has shorter untufted ears, longer tail, , shorter, more rounded face. have small, rounded ears , eye colors range pale blue brown.
