born in milwaukee, wisconsin, in 1911, parents of modest means, charles wedemeyer developed sense of excitement described “self-initiated” learning. parents, adrian august wedemeyer , laura marie marks wedemeyer strived provide books , magazines , environment conducive learning. avid reader, young wedemeyer made great use of local library in quest knowledge.[2] received bachelor of science degree in education major in english, later pursuing master s degree in english, both university of wisconsin–madison , northwestern university. young educator, taught english , science disadvantaged youth. @ time began formulate progressive ideas on extending educational opportunities integral democratic project.
