first division

the last league championship before creation of premier league won leeds united overhauled manchester united efforts of, among others, gordon strachan, lee chapman, david batty, gary speed, gary mcallister , eric cantona. after runners-up manchester united came newly promoted sheffield wednesday.


defending champions arsenal slipped fourth place , never serious threat retain title. previous season s runners-up liverpool dropped sixth, below manchester city, in first full season under management of graeme souness. liverpool s first finish outside top 2 since 1981.


newly promoted west ham united relegated in bottom place, newly promoted side – notts county – following days later. last day of season saw luton town lose top flight status after ten seasons.


second division

john lyall took ipswich town first division after six-year absence. suffolk club followed runners-up middlesbrough, play-off winners blackburn rovers promotion made biggest headlines. bankrolled millionaire chairman jack walker , managed former liverpool boss kenny dalglish, rovers beat leicester city 1–0 in play-off final end 26-year absence top flight.


the second division relegation places occupied port vale, plymouth argyle , brighton & hove albion. brighton had been losing finalists in play-offs twelve months before going down, fortunes had been ruined financial problems , loss of striker mike small west ham united in 1991 close season.


third division

new manager phil holder guided brentford surprise third division championship success, while terry cooper s birmingham city occupied runners-up spot. play-offs won chris turner s peterborough united.


the third division relegation zone occupied shrewsbury town, bury, torquay united , darlington.


fourth division

burnley won fourth division title , became second team, after wolverhampton wanderers, have been champions of 4 divisions of football league. going rotherham united, mansfield town , play-off winners blackpool.


on 25 march 1992, aldershot declared bankrupt , obliged resign football league following long battle stay afloat – record expunged. carlisle united finished bottom, there no relegation league in 1991-92 season. conference champions colchester united returned league after two-year absence.


fa cup

liverpool s graeme souness compensated disappointing season in league winning fa cup. beat second division underdogs sunderland 2–0 in final.

manchester united missed out on league title achieved success in league cup 1–0 triumph against nottingham forest in final.
