construction
construction of arch bridge took place between 1854 , 1856. designed paul-martin gallocher de lagalisserie , inaugurated napoleon iii on 2 april 1856. each side of both of 2 piers decorated statue of military nature: zouave , grenadier georges diébolt, , skirmisher , artilleryman arnaud.

the general public took original bridge measuring instrument water levels in times of flooding on seine: access footpaths river embankments closed when seine s level reached feet of zouave; when water hit thighs, river unnavigable. during great flood of seine in 1910, level reached shoulders. french civil service used pont de la tournelle, not pont de l alma, gauge flood levels, , since 1868 uses pont d austerlitz.
reconstruction
the bridge underwent complete reconstruction girder bridge between 1970 , 1974, had been narrow accommodate increasing traffic both on , below it; moreover, structure had subsided 80 centimeters. statue of zouave retained: skirmisher relocated gravelle stronghold in vincennes, grenadier dijon, , artilleryman la fère.
