a generation later, estate belonged english barrister , architect philip packer, who, in 1662, built present day house of friend christopher wren. philip packer married heiress isabella berkeley, daughter of robert berkeley , elizabeth conyers, in 1652. marriage failed resolve packer s financial problems. isabella died @ age of 32. after philip died in 1686, estate vested in chancery.


groombridge place lay empty twenty years. during time, infamous groombridge gang began smuggling. several times, dragoons called restore order in groombridge. 1 persistent legend dates time of tunnel between cellars @ groombridge place , of nearby crown inn, although no such tunnel has ever been found.


though groombridge place has remained largely untouched since built on 350 years ago, manor has undergone share of restoration. in 1920s, electricity , bathrooms installed. in 1986, roof timbers , chimneys rebuilt original design, heavy growth of ivy had damaged them. house private home , not open public, although gardens are.
