after success of parachutes, coldplay returned studio in september 2001 begin work on second album, rush of blood head, once again ken nelson producing. since band had never stayed in london before, had trouble focusing. decided relocate in liverpool, recorded of songs on parachutes. once there, vocalist chris martin said became obsessed recording. in place first song recorded album. band released album s lead single because track made them want record second album, following strange period of not knowing doing 3 months after success of parachutes. according martin 1 thing kept going: recording in place . other songs started coming.


the band wrote more 20 songs album. of new material, including in place , animals , played live while band still touring parachutes. album s title revealed through post on band s official website. album released in august 2002 , spawned several popular singles, including in place , clocks , , ballad scientist . latter inspired george harrison s things must pass , released in 1970.


coldplay toured june 2002 september 2003 rush of blood head tour. visited 5 continents, including co-headlining festival dates @ glastonbury festival, v2003 , rock werchter. many concerts showcased elaborate lighting , individualised screens reminiscent of u2 s elevation tour , 9 inch nails fragility tour. during extended tour, coldplay recorded live dvd , cd, live 2003, @ sydney s hordern pavilion. @ 2003 brit awards held @ earls court, london, coldplay received awards best british group, , best british album. on 28 august 2003, coldplay performed scientist @ 2003 mtv video music awards @ radio city music hall in new york city, , won 3 awards.


in december 2003, readers of rolling stone chose coldplay best artist , best band of year. @ time band covered pretenders 1983 song 2000 miles (which made available download on official website). 2000 miles top selling uk download year, proceeds sales donated future forests , stop handgun violence campaigns. rush of blood head won grammy award best alternative music album @ 2003 grammy awards. @ 2004 grammy awards, coldplay earned record of year clocks .
