oldenburg laid down in 1883 @ ag vulcan shipyard in stettin, under construction number 132. launched on 20 december 1884, after fitting-out work commenced. completed april 1886 , commissioned german navy on 8 april. joined division of fleet, alongside sachsen, bayern, , württemberg, annual fleet maneuvers. bayern , württemberg suffered engine troubles throughout exercises, oldenburg performed satisfactorily.


in june 1887, germany dedicated kaiser wilhelm canal; oldenburg among ships present during celebrations. oldenburg assigned training squadron maneuvers in august–september 1887, along könig wilhelm , kaiser. majority of exercises focused in baltic, fleet did conduct maneuvers in north sea 8 days in september. oldenburg participated in visit great britain in august 1889, wilhelm ii took part in cowes regatta. ship assigned division sachsen, baden, , new cruiser irene. oldenburg , rest of fleet joined royal navy in fleet review queen victoria.


oldenburg participated in ceremonial transfer of island of helgoland british german control in summer of 1890. present during fleet maneuvers in september, entire eight-ship armored squadron simulated russian fleet blockading kiel. remained division in 1891; year s maneuvers simulated two-front war against russia , either france or denmark. in 1892, however, württemberg replaced oldenburg in division, , latter went reserve. ship remained out of service next 5 years. returned active duty in 1897 join international naval demonstration off island of crete, had been annexed greece. ship remained in demonstration until march 1898, when germany , austria-hungary withdrew naval contingents in show of dissatisfaction on compromise solution, left crete under ottoman control, greek prince.


in 1900, oldenburg reduced serve harbor guard ship. later used depot ship before being stricken naval register on 13 january 1912. vessel used target ship high seas fleet until after german defeat in world war i. oldenburg sold hattinger company, ship-breaking firm, on 5 may 1919. ship dismantled scrap in wilhelmshaven year.
