basketball came texas tech 2 years after school founded , program has since won 18 conference titles, last 1 being in 1996, of have been won while red raiders in border conference , southwest conference tenures. inaugural game 37–25 loss daniel baker college. tech lose 2 more games before clinching first ever victory—35–21 @ sul ross university.


grady higginbotham first coach, earning 14–18 record on 2 seasons. @ .438, higgenbotham tech basketball coach garner overall losing record during stay. following higgenbotham s departure, victor payne led matadors (as school s teams known until 1936) 1927 1930. final tally stood @ 32 wins , 20 losses. w. l. golightly coached 1 season, bringing in 11–9 record. dell morgan held head coaching job 1931 1934, chalking 42 wins 29 losses. followed virgil ballard. though ballard coached single season, during time team won milestone 100th game, one-point victory on house of david. ballard left 15–9 record.


berl huffman twice head basketball coach @ texas tech—first 1935 1942 , 1946 1947. during total of 8 seasons, garnered record of 121–67. polk robison other person serve 2 different times head basketball coach @ school. when huffman left in 1942, robison took job. and, when huffman left second time in 1947, robison again filled position, time remaining until 1961. @ total of 18 seasons, stay second longest of red raiders basketball coach, behind gerald myers. departed after leading teams 254 wins, 195 losses, , first 2 ncaa tournaments in school history.


gene gibson followed robison position. in 8 seasons, chalked second worst record of head basketball coach @ tech. still, @ 100–92, there 8 more wins losses. bob bass led program 22–15 record on season-and-a-half before returning professional basketball coaching duties.



bob knight became men s basketball coach in 2001. retired on february 4, 2008. on new year s day 2007, 70–68 defeat of new mexico tech marked 880th total win knight, making him winningest coach in men s college basketball history. knight has several other distinctions, including being coach win ncaa, nit, olympic gold, , pan-am gold, , has been given several awards. knight succeeded son pat knight. after pat knight s termination, billy gillispie named head coach on march 20, 2011 , subsequently resigned due health reasons after 1 season following while being amidst allegations of mistreating players. chris walker took on over interim basis 2012 season , led red raiders 11–20 record.


in march 2013, tubby smith named new men s basketball coach , lead team first upset on top 25 opponent since 2009. texas tech students broke both school , big 12 conference records student attendance @ united spirit arena during february 25, 2014 loss kansas state. record of 6,086 students fell less 2,000 short of national record.
