the word pentathlon derived greek pente (five) , athlon (contest). ancient olympic pentathlon comprised sprint, javelin , discus throws, long jump, , wrestling. modern pentathlon multi-sport event. in men s track , field, pentathlon competitions held in 20th century, ten-event decathlon became standard multi-event contest.
the international women s sports federation established in 1921 , first reported pentathlon in 1922 women s olympiad in monte carlo. events were: 60 m, 300 m, high jump, two-hand javelin, , two-hand shot. in late 1920s, events were: shot , long jump on first day, , 100 m, high jump, , javelin on second day. first world record recognised iaaf set @ 1934 women s world games gisela mauermayer.
from 1949 events were: shot, high jump, , 200 m on first day; 80 m hurdles , long jump on second. scoring tables changed in 1954, , again in 1971. in 1961, order of events changed to: 80 m hurdles, shot, , high jump on first day; long jump , 200 m on second. 1977 contested in single day. pentathlon contested @ european athletics championships 1950 1978, , @ olympics 1964 until 1980. iaaf has not ratified world records in outdoor pentathlon since replacing in 1981 heptathlon.
