the 320th bombardment wing, medium (bw) activated @ march air force base, california on 1 december 1952. 320th bw assumed assets of 106th bombardment wing, federalized new york air national guard unit brought onto active duty during korean war.
at march, wing equipped second-line boeing b-29 superfortresses , conducted global bombardment training , air refueling operations meet strategic air command (sac) commitments. wing employed training air force reservists , air national guardsmen backfill rotating b-29 superfortress combat crews deployed fifteenth air force far east air forces serving in korean war.
the wing replaced propeller-driven b-29s new boeing b-47e stratojet swept-wing medium bombers capable of flying @ high subsonic speeds , designed penetrating airspace of soviet union in 1953. wing trained initial b-47 cadre 96th bombardment wing, december 1953 january 1955 , subsequently deployed wing raf brize norton, england 5 june 4 september 1954 , andersen air force base, guam 5 october 1956 11 january 1957. in late 1950s, b-47 stratojet considered reaching obsolescence, , being phased out of sac s strategic arsenal. aircraft reassigned other sac units replacements in late 1959 , 1960 becoming non-operational.
