balwearie high school


the first school established in town kirkcaldy burgh school in 1582 of local minister, dr david spens. until premises found, pupils taught in minister s house. notable pupils include robert adam , adam smith. school located @ hill street before being replaced kirkcaldy grammar school on st brycedale avenue in 1843. government list of 1872 described school being of higher class . new building school gifted town in 1893 michael barker nairn, linen manufacturer. other schools established in town, including girls schools, subscription schools, , apprentice schools. passing of education (scotland) act in 1872 replaced voluntary education in town school-based education children aged 5 13.


kirkcaldy has 4 secondary schools , eleven primary schools. other educational facilities include private school , school children learning difficulties. kirkcaldy high school, oldest secondary school, serves pupils living in north of town , has occupied site on dunnikier way since 1958. balwearie high school opened junior secondary school in 1964 , upgraded high school in 1972. school serves pupils living in western end of town , neighbouring kinghorn , burntisland. viewforth high school, opened in 1908, junior secondary school, upgraded high school in 1980. plans have been approved build new secondary school kirkcaldy east @ site of windmill road playing fields. work funded through building fife s school project completion in august 2016. st andrews rc high school, opened in late 1950s 1 of 2 roman catholic secondary schools in fife. caters pupils living in eastern half of fife, st andrews burntisland , lochgelly.


further education provided fife college have main campus on st brycedale avenue. college created in august 2013 merger of adam smith college, fife , carnegie college, dunfermline. university of dundee has campus in town specialises school nursing , midwifery. built fife health board use of old fife college of further , higher education, campus taken on university in 1996.
