aitkin s rock supposed rock in north atlantic. despite being observed , named merchant, had not been reliably charted, , expeditions, hms gannet in 1824; hms harrier , hms badger in 1827; , hms pylades , hms dispatch had failed locate it. in summer of 1830, admiralty placed vidal in command of hms onyx , hms leveret , ordered him investigate. there had been @ least 7 separate reports of potential hazard, said small , protruding 4 feet water. francis beaufort worked out rough position rock , vidal set out investigate. spent 6 weeks charting supposed locations , of positions in between, without discovering evidence. satisfied rock mere vigia, returned port. during surveys in search of rock, discovered , charted vidal bank, , next year became first accurately chart , describe rockall.
