the little sahara sand dunes remnants of large river delta formed sevier river 12,500 20,000 years ago. river emptied ancient lake bonneville near present day mouth of leamington canyon. after lake bonneville receded, winds transported sand river delta current location. dunes still moving 5 9 feet (1.5 2.7 m) per year. 1 of primary barriers sand movement sand hills, located entirely within recreation area , substantially slow movement of blowing sand.


the sand consists of quartz grains, minor amounts of feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet , magnetite.
