by 1811 there fifty-three houses , 4 streets. pier extended in 1821 , population peaked in same year, when island had 221 people. there 3 schools, wesleyan chapel, , 3 public houses, used visiting sailors. village went decline following major improvements nearby penzance harbour , extension of railway penzance in 1852, , many of houses , buildings demolished. short underground, funicular narrow gauge railway built in victorian times. used bring luggage house. operates, demonstration reasons , not open general public, although small stretch visible @ harbour. britain s last functionally operational 4 ft 6 in (1,372 mm) railway.


in late 19th century anchorite s remains discovered in tomb within mount s domestic chapel. mount sold in 1659 colonel john st aubyn. of 2016 descendants, lords st levan, remain seated @ st michael s mount.
