in 1887 green pond, walterboro , branchville railway opened short branch of main line walterboro, south carolina. walterborough , western railroad continued line ehrhardt in 1896, , 2 merged green pond, walterboro , branchville railroad in 1900.
on may 30, 1887, florida state law chapter 3794 approved, authorizing sf&w build lines tallahassee , monticello north georgia state line, connecting branches thomasville, georgia. tallahassee branch never built, monticello branch opened in 1888.
plant obtained controlling interest in alabama midland railway in july 1890. line continued main line bainbridge west montgomery, alabama. southwestern alabama railway , abbeville southern railway, 2 branches of line, acquired in 1890s.
in 1890, 3 ft narrow gauge florida southern railway went receivership , remained 2 years. during time, charlotte harbor branch operated independently , converted portion of line 4 ft 8 ⁄2 in. in 1892, plant bought florida southern railway under foreclosure , reorganized florida southern railroad. @ time, florida southern system stretched south end of plant system @ gainesville south via ocala, using trackage rights on south florida railroad s pemberton ferry branch, punta gorda. florida southern railroad integrated rest of plant system in 1896 , converted 4 ft 8 ⁄2 in same year.
the silver springs, ocala , gulf railroad chartered in 1877 , opened in 1892, running ocala west dunnellon , south homosassa , inverness. connection built inverness south florida railroad @ pemberton ferry.
the winston , bone valley railroad, opened in 1892 serve phosphate mines near lakeland, became part of plant system in 1896.

in 1895, plant bought 3 ft narrow gauge sanford , st. petersburg railroad (previously orange belt railway) in 1895, stretched across state sanford st. petersburg. profitable section of line converted 4 ft 8 ⁄2 in, leaving remaining section trilby sanford in original gauge. 4 ft 8 ⁄2 in florida midland railway in orlando area acquired in 1896, line north of sanford , st. petersburg railroad abandoned, , remaining track sanford kissimmee converted 3 ft narrow gauge. keeping these 2 connecting lines same narrow gauge, able work in conjunction 1 another, utilizing same narrow gauge equipment both sanford , st. petersburg railroad , converted florida southern railroad.
in 1899, jacksonville, tampa , key west railway, except branch titusville (which had been sold florida east coast railway), reorganized , bought plant jacksonville , st. johns river railway. supplied connection between jacksonville , sanford without need steamboat transfer @ each end, system connections @ tavares , palatka.
the plant system built straight 54 mi (87 km) folkston cutoff in southeast georgia in 1901. ran old waycross , florida railroad @ folkston north via nahunta jesup on sf&w mainline, allowing trains bypass waycross , save 19 mi (31 km) on old route.
