goelet s 1881 norseman schooner


he had several yachts including schooner, norseman designed william townsend , built in 1881 @ richard & cornelius poillon shipyard in brooklyn. 1893 chartered lillie langtry s yacht white ladye. final yacht named mayflower , designed george lennox watson in 1896 , built on clyde (scotland) j & g thompson. after goelet s death yacht sold navy , became famous uss mayflower (py-1). goelet s brother, robert, had identical yacht built @ same time , in same yard , later became uss nahma (sp-771).

goelet s newport residence, ochre court in 1904.


he , wife owned townhouse @ 608 fifth avenue in new york city , villa in nice, france. when in london, resided @ wimbourne house. in 1892, , wife commissioned ochre court, châteauesque mansion in newport, rhode island. home built @ cost of $4.5 million , second largest mansion in newport after nearby breakers, both designed architect richard morris hunt.
